Vision: Design for the Future
The Archdais Competition recently culminated in a stunning display of creativity and vision. Architects, designers, students, and visionaries around the globe rose to the challenge of designing an Educational Centre for Visually Impaired Learners, aimed at breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity.
Each submission was a testament to the power of design in bridging gaps and creating empathetic, inclusive environments. Our participants showcased how architecture can do more than create spaces, it can build communities and change perceptions. Their work highlighted the significance of accessible, aesthetically pleasing, and functional designs in enhancing lives.

Juhani Pallasmaa, born 1936 in Hämeenlinna, Finland, is a distinguished architect and writer based in Helsinki. He led his firm, Juhani Pallasmaa Architects, for nearly three decades. A former Professor and Dean at Helsinki University of Technology, Pallasmaa has penned over 70 books, with 'The Eyes of the Skin' being notably acclaimed. A member of the Pritzker Architecture Prize Jury from 2008-14, he holds honorary memberships in SAFA, AIA, and RIBA and boasts six Honorary Doctorates.

Sheila Sri Prakash, founder of Shilpa Architects Planners Designers, is a renowned sustainability expert and architect. Recognized by the World Economic Forum, she created the Reciprocal Design Index for urban sustainability. A recipient of Romania's “Bene Merenti” Medallion (2017), she's a Harvard GSD alum with global architectural achievements. Also a passionate Bharathanatyam dancer and art patron.

MARIANA CABUGUEIRA, founder of Mariana Cabugueira Studios, specializes in blending physical and digital architectural design. A graduate from FAL, Lisbon, and AA-DRL, London, she's a former Senior Architect at Zaha Hadid Architects, leading projects like Navi Mumbai Airport. Later, she directed Wilder World's digital metaverse city, Wiami, before launching her own practice in 2023. Mariana is also the head tutor at the Meta-Fluid Studio with PA Academy and an acclaimed international speaker.

K T Ravindran is a prominent Urban Designer. He served as Dean of SPA Delhi and the RICS School of Built Environment and is now Professor Emeritus at Mohamed Sathak A J Academy, Chennai. Ravindran has contributed notably to urban design in Tamil Nadu and was awarded the Madhav Achwal Gold Medal in 2022. He's the Founding President of the Institute of Urban Designers India, former Chairman of Delhi Urban Art Commission, and an international advocate for sustainable architecture.

Adèle Naudé Santos, FAIA, acclaimed architect and planner, is celebrated for her design work across diverse global cultures. With a strong focus on the human spirit and societal context, she's notably shaped housing projects on four continents. Santos has held esteemed roles at Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, UCSD, and was Dean of MIT's School of Architecture and Planning from 2004-2014, where she remains a professor. She's an alumna of the Architectural Association, London, Harvard, and the University of Pennsylvania.

An alumnus of the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, his firm's portfolio includes Medical and Health Care, Museum Design, and Master Planning. SMG is a founding board member of the Association of Architectural Organisations [AAO], Chicago, and the Founding President of Architecture and Design Foundation [India]. His dedication earned him the “Award for Excellence 2017” by the Government of Telangana and the “Fellow of IGBC” award in 2019. He maintains notable affiliations with leading architectural institutes worldwide.

Ar. Gita Balakrishnan, founder of Ethos, is renowned for her 'Walk for Arcause' campaign, emphasizing Architectural Social Responsibility. An alumna of the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, with training from Carnegie Mellon University, USA, she established Ethos in 2002 and later introduced ACEDGE in 2018 to uplift architectural education. Recognized with the Woman of the Year Award 2023 by D-arc Build, Gita is also a passionate runner, having completed multiple marathons.

A G Krishna Menon, a seasoned Delhi-based architect and urban planner, co-founded the TVB School of Habitat Studies, now part of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. Instrumental in drafting the 2004 INTACH Charter for Conservation, he's contributed to key urban projects like The Delhi Master Plan–2021. Menon is a respected lecturer, researcher, and former Convenor of INTACH’s Delhi Chapter.

Architect Professor Ranjit Sabikhi, based in New Delhi since 1961, pioneered the first Urban Design course at the School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi. With international experience including work on London's Golden Lane Housing Project, he founded The Design Group and Arcop Design Group, contributing widely to architecture in India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Recognized with multiple awards, Sabikhi has been at the helm of significant projects, such as the Trident Hotel in Cochin. He's also served on the jury for the New World Bank Headquarters in Washington D.C.

Patrik Schumacher is principal of Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and Chairman for life of the Employee Benefit Trust owning ZHA. He is leading the firm since Zaha Hadid's passing in March 2016. He joined Zaha Hadid in 1988 and was seminal in developing Zaha Hadid Architects to become a 500 strong global architecture and design brand.

Mark Burry is Director of Swinburne University of Technology's 'Smart Cities Research Institute', leading a whole-of-university research approach to ensure future cities meet the needs of all. In 2018 Mark received the Order of Australia (A) for "service to spatial information architecture" and as an innovator in apply- ing digital manufacturing and construction methods and was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE). Mark is an architect who has published on two main themes: putting theory into prac- tie regarding procuring 'challenging' architecture, and the work and theories of the architect Antoni Gaudí. He has been Senior Architect to the Sagrada Família Basilica Foundation since 1979. In 2001 Mark founded the Spatial Informa- tion Architecture Laboratory (SIAL) at RMIT University before establishing the Design Research Institute (DRI) in 2008. He held an ARC funded Federation Fellowship in Complex Architecture and Convergent Design' 2007-2012. He joined the Universi- ty of Melbourne in 2014 as Professor of Urban Futures at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning.

Sean Godsell was born in Melbourne in Imagining a Place of Faith for the secular world 1960.He obtained a Masters of Architecture degree from MIT University in 1999 entitled 'The Appropriateness of the Contemporary Australian Dwelling! His work has been published in the world's leading Architectural journals including Architectural Review (UK) Architectural Record (USA) Domus (Italy). In July 2002 the influential English design magazine wallpaper listed him as one of ten I people destined to 'change the way we live. He was the only Australian and the only Architect in the group. In July 2003 he received a Citation from the President of the American Institute of Architects for his work for the I homeless. His Future Shack prototype was exhibited from May to October 2004 at the Smithsonian Institute's Cooper Hewitt Design Museum in New York. In 2015 he was shortlisted for the $450million Sydney Modern project at the Art Gallery of NSW and in 2016 was shortlisted for the National Conservatory at the National Botanic Gardens in Canberra. He received the 2016 DETAIL Prize in Germany for the 2014 M Pavilion.In 2018 he received a Papal Silver Medal for his Vatican Chapel on the island of S Giorgio Maggiore in Venice for the 2018 Architectural Biennale.

Warrick has also self published his original fantasy picture book "Princess Nyissa: The Legend of the Lost Light" as well as his Sci-Fi Dystopian comic "ZODIAC:ZEN".

Ken Yeang is the Executive Director of T.R. Hamzah and Yeang Sdn. Bhd. He is both an architect and ecologist, known for his authentic innovative, signature eco-architecture and masterplans, that have a distinctive verdant biodiverse green aesthetic, designed based on the science of ecology, functioning beyond accreditation systems. He trained at the Architectural Association School (UK). His doctorate is from Cambridge University on ecological architecture and planning. He has authored over 12 books on green architecture. Awards include the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, Malaysian Institute of Architects Gold Medal, Malaysian Government's Merdeka Award, Architectural Society of China's Liang Sicheng Architecture Prize. He holds the Plym Distinguished Professorship at Illinois University. The Guardian newspaper names him, "one of the 50 people who could save the planet.."

Sanjay strongly believes that every project should be designed contextually evolving spaces that are perceived in new ways. Each design takes cognizes of the climate and integrates sustainability in cohesive way. This ideology is reflected in the extensive work done by the firm in the 3 decades since its inception. Sanjay Puri graduated from the Academy of Architecture, Mumbai in 1988. He worked with Architect Hafeez Contractor throughout the five years of education from 1983 to 1988 and was made an Associate of the firm in 1988 upon graduation. He continued to work there for 4 years more as a Senior Associate prior to commencing Sanjay Puri Architects in 1992.
