Home designing as a subject, has evolved since centuries. When we think of ‘home’, the mind traces the undulating contours of memories and experiences. The memory of textures, and colours; of light and shade; of smells and sounds become the intangible notions of what makes a ‘home.’ Homes make up layers of nostalgia embedded in experiences. The touch of a coarse fabric against the smooth surface of the wall, or of the sunlight filtered on finished floor becomes a unique experienceof space.
Interior spaces are not just designed forms, but hold within them stories of the dweller’s patterns of life. They allow an integration of images, events, moments and movements, all unfolding in film-like sequences, speaking to each person and object inhabiting the space. Hence, the surfaces of a home and the elements of its décor, like a stage set, are always in tandem. The objects spaced in an interior setting, are not merely frozen in time, but are conversant with one another, and with the environment around them. They have a unique dialogue with architecture; with materials and surfaces of the home, with windows and openings of the room, and with spatiality and directionalityof the area.
This competition thus aims to know the participants’ idea of the interior home design, in the context of any site that they select. It encourages participants to bring to life the basic functionality of the house, and explore their own notions of what a ‘home' is. The competition is open to participants creating new designs for the brief; or uploading projects/assignments they might have done earlier in their academic or professional careers. We urge Students, Architects, Interior Designers & Firms to unwind back, and think through their earlier projects, and ask if their designs address the above mentioned ideas of interior designs.
We have provided a standard apartment block plan. Participants, who cannot upload projects they may have done previously, may design the apartment given. Bearing in mind the area constraints, and spatiality of the space, designers are welcome to explore their creative abilities and create novel approaches to the conceptual enlivening of the space, as a ‘home’
