Frequently asked questions

1Do I need to design the entire home interior, or can I submit only a part of it?

For this competition, we ask you to share the interiors of a complete home — not only a single room. A home is understood best when we see how its spaces relate to each other and how they come together to create one lived experience. When only one room is shown, we miss the overall story of the home, its transitions, its moods, and its rhythm. So your entry should include the full home interior as one cohesive design.

2Can I redesign an existing home I have already worked on or lived in?

Yes, you may revisit any home you know well, whether it is one you designed professionally, your college project, or even the home you grew up in. You can reinterpret it, refine it, or imagine a new version of it. What matters is the clarity and emotion with which you express the idea of home.

3Can the project be fictional, or does it have to be realistic?

Your project can be entirely fictional. It does not need to exist in the real world or conform to constraints outside the narrative you want to create. The competition is open to imagined spaces, emotional spaces, memory-inspired interiors, or conceptual explorations of what a home can be.

4Am I allowed to change all dimensions, walls, and layout in the optional plan?

Yes. The optional plan is simply a base for those who prefer a starting point. Every element in it — including walls, openings, proportions, circulation, and even the overall geometry — may be changed freely. You may rebuild it completely or use it lightly; it carries no restrictions.

5If I use the optional plan, can I change the floor-to-floor height, openings, and structural elements?

You can alter anything you wish. The height, opening sizes, positions of windows and doors, and even the internal arrangement may be adjusted to suit your design. The optional plan is not a structural drawing, so you may expand, reshape, reorganise, or reinterpret every part of it.

6Do I have to follow Vaastu/Feng Shui or any cultural principles?

No. You are free to design a home that reflects your own cultural reading, or none at all. If aligning with a cultural principle strengthens your story, you may include it — but nothing in the competition requires you to follow any traditional system.

7Does the design have to be technically buildable, or can it be conceptual?

The design does not need to be buildable. This is an ideas competition, and you are encouraged to explore conceptual, emotional, and narrative aspects of home design without worrying about execution-level constraints.

8Can I include landscape elements like small balconies, courtyards, or terraces?

Yes. Homes often breathe through their edges — terraces, balconies, pocket gardens, light courts, and transitional spaces. You may include any such element if it supports your concept, whether or not it appears in the optional plan.

9Can I design furniture inside the space?

If designing furniture helps express the personality of your home, you are welcome to include it. Built-ins, loose furniture, crafted pieces, or conceptual elements — all are welcome as long as they support your story.

10Do I need to show lighting, material boards, or styling?

Only if it strengthens your presentation. Lighting, material palettes, and styling elements can add character, but they are not mandatory. You may use them to create mood and atmosphere, or choose a more minimal sheet if that suits your concept better.

11Do I need to prepare working drawings or technical drawings?

No. You are not required to produce GFC drawings, joinery details, service layouts, or any technical documentation. The competition focuses on clarity of intent and emotional expression, not technical execution.

12Do I have to include electrical, furniture, or layout details?

No. You may include them only if they are essential to communicate your design. The competition does not demand any technical layout.

13Is a floor plan mandatory?

We encourage it because a plan helps anchor the spatial story. But the way you draw it — simple, abstract, diagrammatic, or highly detailed — is entirely your choice. Its purpose is to clarify movement and organisation, not to demonstrate drafting skill.

14Do I have to include a section or elevation?

You may include one if it helps communicate scale, height, atmosphere, or the drama of the interior. It is not compulsory. Only include drawings that strengthen the story of your home.

15How many views or renderings are expected?

There is no fixed number. Some designers include one powerful interior view; others choose two or three. What matters is what best communicates your mood, light, and lived experience of the space.

16Can I submit only visual storytelling or conceptual diagrams without detailed drawings?

Yes. If your diagrams, illustrations, or conceptual visuals convey the essence of your home clearly, they are completely acceptable. The competition values communication, not drafting density.

17Can my sheet be more image-heavy and less drawing-heavy?

Yes. Many compelling sheets prioritise mood, visuals, and storytelling. You may use atmospheric views, collages, sketches, or illustrations if they express your concept better than conventional drawings.

18Can the sheet include images of materials or a moodboard?

Yes. If materiality is central to your design, you are welcome to include a moodboard or palette. Use it only if it enhances your concept.

19Do I need any specific software?

No. You may use any tool — from hand drawing to digital modelling to simple collages. The competition does not judge software skill.

20Can I submit hand-drawn sketches?

Yes. A well-scanned hand-drawn sheet is completely acceptable and often carries strong emotional expression.

21Can I use AI-generated renderings?

You may use AI-generated visuals if they support your idea, but ensure that the design thinking, layout, and concept are your own. The sheet must reflect your authorship.

22Can I use Photoshop collages?

Yes. Collaging is a powerful way to express mood and materiality. You may use it as long as the design remains original.

23Can I model it in SketchUp or Blender?

Yes. You may use any 3D software. The choice of tool does not influence the evaluation.

24Can I participate alone?

Yes. You may join individually or form a team of up to three members.

25Can I participate with my friend from a different college or country?

Yes. Teams can be interdisciplinary, cross-country, or formed across different institutions or professions.

26Can a non-architect join my team?

Yes. Anyone who resonates with the idea of home may join the competition, regardless of background.

27Can professionals and students be in the same team?

Yes. There are no restrictions on academic or professional status.

28Is there an age limit?

There is no upper age limit. Participants under 18 must have a team leader who is above 18.

29Can I resubmit if I uploaded the wrong sheet?

Yes, if you notify us within 24 hours of your first submission.

30My sheet is more than 10MB. How do I compress it?

You may use any online file compressor while ensuring readability is maintained.

31The system is not accepting my file. What mistake am I making?

Ensure it is JPG/JPEG, under 10MB, and landscape A1 size. If it still fails, email your submission.

32I am not from India. Can I still participate?

Yes. The competition welcomes participants from all countries.

33Do I need to convert fees into INR?

No. The website automatically displays fees in your selected category.

34Can I submit from any country?

Yes. You can register and submit from anywhere in the world.

35Do I need to be physically present for anything?

No. The entire competition is conducted online.

36Can I include my name on the sheet?

No. Any identifying information leads to disqualification.

37Can I publish my design on social media before the results?

We recommend waiting until results are announced to maintain anonymity.

38How does the jury evaluate?

The jury evaluates entries independently and anonymously, focusing on concept, emotional depth, clarity, representation, and completeness.

39Can I get feedback on my design?

We do not provide individual feedback due to the scale of submissions.

40When and how are results announced?

Results are announced on the competition page on the specified date and shared through email and social media.

41Will shortlisted entries be published?

Yes. Notable works, honourable mentions, and winners will be featured online.

42Can I use this project in my portfolio?

Yes. Your design belongs to you, and you may include it in your portfolio after the competition concludes.

43Will Archdais publish my work?

Selected entries will be published on our website and social media.

44Will I receive a physical certificate or only digital?

All certificates are digital.

45My design is simple. Will I stand a chance?

Yes. Simplicity, when thoughtful and heartfelt, can be extremely powerful. You do not need complexity to create meaning.

46I have never done any real on-site projects. Can I still participate?

Absolutely. This competition is about imagination, not construction experience. Many participants are students exploring interiors for the first time.

47What if my sheet doesn’t look very polished?

Polish is secondary. What matters is whether your sheet communicates your idea clearly and emotionally.

48What if I miss the early registration deadline — will it reduce my chances?

Not at all. Registration stage has no influence on the evaluation.

49Can I submit something deeply personal?

Yes. Homes are intimate spaces, and personal stories often make powerful designs.

50I'm scared of messing up the sheet. Can I get help?

You may reach out to us with technical doubts, but remember — every designer feels this fear. Start with clarity, and the sheet will follow.

The Team Code must appear at the top right corner. If it interferes with your layout, you may adjust the design around it, but the position cannot change.
