Project Description
Mandvi is a small town located on the banks of the River Tapi, 60 km east of Surat. It was once a princely town under the rule of a Bhil(Tribal Community) King with Pipalwada as its capital. After independence, Mandvi became part of the Old Bombay State, and subsequently came under the State of Gujarat. Today Mandvi forms the Headquarters of MandviTaluka in Surat District in south Gujarat. It is well-known as an art centre due to the various art forms of the tribal areas. It has created a name for itself in the arts of carpentry, blacksmith work and handloom-based village industry. The Site lies in the Eastern tribal belt of Gujarat, India. Mandvi is surrounded by many small tribal villages and majority of the students of Mandvi Education Society are from these villages. Thus this project becomes a prestigious one and a game changer infrastructure for Education Society. Also, this project was an aid to the education society from an atomic power station (under central government of India) which lies in 1 km radius for cultural growth of the only education society of the town. The orientation and design of the building responds to its context and the adjoining roads. The site is approximately 3 meters higher than the neighboring road and is enclosed by other academic blocks. The campus master planning was an important design consideration since the site is located within an educational society. The simplicity of the form is derived from the program itself. The whole program was divided into 3 parts - Auditorium block, circular wall and a rectangular admin & service block.Idea was to design a public interface within the campus that also interacts with the adjoining road and surroundings outside the campus as the dialogue of this structure with the road is very important. The rectangular seating hall is enveloped within the circular wall such that it remains unseen from its context comprising of structures with not more than G+1 level. The circular wall serves as a barricade and marks for the overall configuration. The wall along with the fabricated roof forms the exterior skin of the building. Dashes of yellow and red add character and enhance the natural warmth of the spaces.
