Project Description
Ash mill is a high performance, single family house located in Doylestown PA. Surrounded by lush greenery and a naturally sloping site which overlooks a water body on the West side, Ash Mill is a passion project.
The opportunity to work with a client who is an architect on the project, presented a unique approach and vision for the design.
The program was closely curated by the clients and had spaces suitable for a retirement home. They love to host friends and family, so the program spaces includes - a Great room, Primary bedroom and bath, along with 2 Guest Bedrooms located on the lower level. Both the primary occupants are avid readers so we incorporated a library as well. Other utility areas like mechanical room and a full size garage were also part of the program.
Inspired by modernist architecture, Ash Mill doesn’t shy and in-fact proudly presents straight lines juxtaposed amongst the natural curves in the context. The intersecting of the boxes on the first level which sits on a concrete base is the basic form of the house. The design takes inspiration from barns; which are found in and around the town. The sloping roof and the use of black wood siding is a reflects elements of the barn. Corten steel is one of the materials that is used on the exterior to tie the two types of wood siding and is used on the fireplaces inside the house as well.
Ash Mill is a product of various trials and errors in terms of form and materiality, which was only possible because of the clients.
